ITHACA, N.Y- The University of Iowa women’s rowing team wrapped-up regular season competition Saturday in Ithaca, N.Y. The Hawkeyes advanced the 1V4 and 2V8 to the “winner race” and the 1V8 to the consolation race in the afternoon session.
The Hawkeyes raced down a 2000 meters stretch of the Cayuga Inlet. There was stiff headwind, which kept building throughout the day and increased throughout the race course.
“This weekend proved to be a great tune up for our upcoming conference championship,” said Head Coach Mandi Kowal. “We experienced a series of intense racing. Both of the V4 and 2V8 advanced to the afternoon ‘winners races’.”
Iowa’s varsity 4 boat was undefeated on the day. It recorded its first victory in the morning session, which advanced the boat to the afternoon winner’s race. The crew faced Cornell and Buffalo in the winner’s race and posted another victory with a time of 8:17.9.
“From the first stroke of the race they rowed with a strong push right through the wind,” commented Kowal. “It was their best race of the spring season.”
The second varsity 8 also advanced to a winner’s race in the afternoon after winning its morning race. The boat had to come from a boat length down to move back up to the University of Rhode Island (URI) crew, which made for a very intense race in the last 250 meters. The crew took second place with a time of 7:24.7, finishing behind Cornell by only 2.9 seconds and ahead of the URI.
“I was impressed with their composure after being down so much early on and to keep the focus on their crew and being patient,” added Kowal.
The Hawkeyes varsity 8 boat marked a second place finish in the morning race to advance to the consolation race in the afternoon. The crew raced Dartmouth and Buffalo in the consolation and finished in second place at 7:27.2.
“After regrouping from the morning race they made considerable adjustments to their race plan and had their best piece of the day,” said Kowal.
Iowa returns to action May 15 when it travels to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championships.
“We have two weeks to make our final adjustments for one heck of a Big Ten Championships,” said Kowal.
