Hawkeyes Successful in Singles

Day 2 Results

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa women’s tennis competed in day two of the Gopher Invitational on Saturday. The Hawkeyes dominated in singles, posting a 13-1 record. In addition, Iowa saw five individuals improve their singles record to 3-0 for the tournament. The Hawkeyes went 3-1 in doubles play.

Senior Sonja Molnar advanced to the Mauer Singles Flight Championship by defeating Rebecca Bodine of LSU, 6-2, 6-2, and Missouri’s Maria Christensen, 6-4, 6-4. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, is 3-0 at the Gopher Invitational. Freshman Shelby Talcott also improved her tournament record to 3-0 and advanced to the Mauer Singles Flight Championship. The Long Island, N.Y., native topped Missouri’s Jamie Mera, 6-4, 6-4, and Nicky Stracar of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-2.

In the McNabb Singles Flight, freshman Ellen Silver won matches against Rachel Stuhlmann of Missouri (6-1, 6-1) and Wisconsin’s Sarah Loebel (6-4, 6-0) to advance to Sunday’s championship. Sophomore Christina Harazin bounced back from a day one loss by advancing to the bracket’s consolation championship. Harazin topped Adele Henke of Bradley, 6-0, 6-2, and Jenna Langhorst of Iowa State, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10). Freshman Katie Zordani won her quarterfinal match-up against Missouri’s Alexandra Clark, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-7), before falling to Julia Courter in the semifinals.

Senior Ally Majercik ended the day 3-0 in the Love Singles Bracket and advanced to the championship after winning decisions against Nikki Reber of Iowa State and Wisconsin’s Lauren Gruber. In her semifinal match against Gruber, Majercik fought off a match point in the third set super breaker to win. Freshman Morven McCulloch defeated Pauline Gilbert of Minnesota, 6-3, 6-1, and Wisconsin’s Caroline Bauer, 6-4, 6-4, to qualify for the Love Singles Bracket championship. All brackets that involve an Iowa verse Iowa final will be switched.

In doubles, Molnar and Talcott moved into the Koivu Doubles Bracket championship by edging Palen/Weica of Minnesota, 8-6. Majercik and Silver advanced to the consolation championship of the bracket by topping Langhorst/Waites of Iowa State, 8-2. Harazin and Zordani also competed in the Koivu Doubles Bracket. The pair went 1-1, earning a 9-7 victory over Iowa State’s Cacciuttolo/Lang.

The Hawkeyes will compete in the final day of the Gopher Invitational tomorrow. Play will begin at 9 am (CT) at the Baseline Tennis Center.
