IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team pounded Indian Hills Community College, 20-1, last Friday night at Pearl Field.
The Hawkeyes finished with 22 hits in the game, while limiting the Warriors to five hits in 10 innings. The two teams agreed to play 10 innings due to the exhibition status.
Three Iowa pitchers scattered the five IHCC hits. Junior Chelsea Lyon threw innings one through four, allowing a single hit with two strikeouts. Freshman Melanie Gladden allowed two hits and had two strikeouts in a pair of innings, while sophomore Kayla Massey had five strikeouts in four frames.
Sophomore Brianna Luna paced the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a fifth inning home run. Including the long ball, the Hawkeyes had 11 extra base hits in the game (nine doubles, one home run, one triple), which included a Nikki Gentile three-bagger.
Iowa returns to action in Des Moines this weekend, competing against Iowa State, Drake and Northern Iowa in the Big Four Classic. The Hawkeyes play ISU (2 p.m.) and DU (4 p.m.) on Saturday and UNI at noon Sunday.
