WACO, Texas — Seniors Marc Bruche and Will Vasos advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles main draw Friday at the Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center.
As the second highest ranked doubles team in the field, the Hawkeye duo received a bye in the first round. Bruche and Vasos then defeated Baylor’s Lars Behlen and Mate Zsiga 8-6 to reach the quarterfinals. They will now face Oklahoma’s Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong for a ticket to the semifinals.
Bruche and Vasos are ranked No. 41 nationally in doubles by the ITA.
Vasos went 1-1 on the day in the singles main draw with a victory in the consolations bracket. Vasos dropped his opening round match to Oklahoma’s Dane Webb 6-1, 6-1. Webb is the ninth ranked freshman in the nation. Vasos, who led the team in singles victories last season, rebounded with a victory over Louisiana-Lafayette’s Ted Nilsson 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.
Bruche, who was seeded seventh in the field, dropped a three-set match to Baylor’s Marco Krickociv. Bruche won the second set 6-3, but dropped the first set 2-6 and last set 3-6. On the consolations side, Bruche fell to New Mexico State’s Felipe Frattinni. Bruche is ranked No. 101 nationally in singles by the ITA.
Action resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center.
