WACO, Texas — University of Iowa seniors Marc Bruche and Will Vasos advanced to the doubles main draw finals match on Saturday at the Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center.
“We had a great performance at Baylor,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “Will Vasos and Marc Bruche advanced to the finals of a prestigious national tournament.”
After a first round bye and a victory put the duo in the quarterfinals on Friday, Bruche and Vasos won two more matches and proved why they’re the second highest ranked team in the field.
The Iowa tandem knocked off Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong 8-6 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Bruche and Vasos defeated Costin Paval and Dane Webb, also of Oklahoma, 8-5.
Bruche and Vasos are ranked No. 41 nationally by the ITA. The duo went 13-6 in matches last season with a 6-4 mark in Big Ten play at the No. 1 doubles position.
Vasos finished the tournament with a 2-2 mark in singles play. Vasos advanced to the consolations quarterfinals match after two straight wins in the back draw. Vasos defeated UT Arlington’s David Subirates 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 to begin the day, but fell to Louisiana-Lafayette’s Damian Farinola 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
Bruche and Vasos will play for the doubles title on Sunday at noon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
