Baylor-HEB Invitational Result
WACO, Texas —University of Iowa seniors Marc Bruche and Will Vasos had their impressive run in the doubles main draw at the Baylor-HEB Invitational come to an end with a runner-up finish on Sunday.
“The fact that our two guys beat two teams from Oklahoma and one from Baylor says a lot – those are a couple of the elite teams in the country,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “That was a great accomplishment from them, and they’ll move up in the doubles rankings as a result.”
Bruche and Vasos fell to Baylor’s Marko Krickovic and Roberto Maytin 8-4 in the finals match at the Hurd Tennis Center in a battle between nationally ranked doubles teams.
Maytin and Krickovic are ranked No. 23 by the ITA, while Bruche and Vasos were the second highest ranked doubles team in the field at No. 41. Both doubles tandems won three straight matches after an opening round bye to reach the finals.
Bruche and Vasos defeated Baylor’s Mate Zsiga and Lars Behlen in the second round on Friday. The Hawkeye duo then defeated two doubles teams from Oklahoma on Saturday to reach the finals match. They knocked off Tsvetan Mihov and Peerakit Siributwong 8-6 in the quarterfinals and defeated Costin Paval and Dane Webb 8-5 in the semifinals.
Vasos also won two matches in singles and finished the tournament 2-2. Vasos defeated Louisiana-Lafayette’s Ted Nilsson and UT Arlington’s David Subirats in the back draw.
With the men’s tennis team also having another successful tournament at the Drake Invitational, Houghton had positive reviews about the weekend’s performances.
“This is one of the best fall weekends we’ve had that I can remember in recent years with our results at Drake and Baylor,” said Houghton.
The Hawkeyes will be back in action from Oct. 1-3 at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla.
