DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team finished with a 1-2 record at the Big Four Classic last weekend at Buel Field in Des Moines. The Hawkeyes dropped a 9-1, five inning contest to Iowa State before topping Drake, 1-0, Saturday. Iowa closed out the weekend with a 4-2 loss at the hands of Northern Iowa.
In the opener, the Cyclones roughed up Iowa starter Chelsea Lyon. ISU scored two runs in the top of the second before a Brianna Luna solo home run cut the score in half. The Cyclones broke the game open in the fourth inning, putting up five runs, four of which came on a Tori Torrescano grand slam.
Iowa bounced back to post a 1-0 victory in a pitching duel against the host Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The two teams combined for five hits in the game.
The Hawkeyes took the advantage in the first extra frame. Sophomore Brittanee Grove used a sacrifice fly to plate Nikki Gentile to give Iowa the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Kayla Massey pitched a complete game shutout, allowing three hits in eight innings. The California native have one strikeout in the contest. Freshman Megan Blank and senior Katie Keim accounted for both of Iowa’s hits, both finishing the game 1-for-3.
Iowa closed out the weekend with a 4-2 Sunday loss to Northern Iowa.
The Hawkeyes, who are 3-2 in five fall games, will host Kirkwood Community College on Friday in a 5/7 p.m. doubleheader at Pearl Field. Admission is free.
