IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team swept its doubleheader over Kirkwood Community College on Friday evening at Pearl Field. The Hawkeyes posted a 10-2 victory in the opening game before downing the Eagles, 9-1, in game two.

Iowa pounded out 14 hits in game one with four players posting multi-hit games. Junior Johnnie Dowling paced the squad, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior Katie Keim, junior Ashley Akers and sophomore Malloree Grove each had two hits. Keim connected on a home run in the five-run sixth inning.

Sophomore Kayla Massey was solid in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits in the complete game. She struck out seven KCC batters, but allowed five base on balls.

The Hawkeyes continued where they left off in game two, tallying 13 hits in a 9-1 triumph. Dowling (2-for-2, 1 RBI), Keim (2-for-4), Watkins (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Grove (2-for-4) all had multi-hit contests. Watkins connected on the team’s second home run of the day in the contest.

Junior Chelsea Lyon was superb on the rubber for the squad. The Oklahoma native struck out eight Eagle batters, while allowing a single run on one hit.

The Hawkeyes had a familiar face in the opposing dugout, as they faced former Hawkeye Stephanie Ochoa. Ochoa, who closed out her UI career in 2011, is in her first season as an assistant coach at KCC.

Iowa (6-2) closes out the fall ball season Oct. 7 when it hosts Muscatine Community College at Pearl Field beginning at 6 p.m.
