PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Iowa field hockey team won at Providence Friday afternoon, 4-1. The 15th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 4-1 with the victory. The match was held at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
“It was a very good road win,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We had a balanced attack and solid team defense. We need to continue to put pressure on our opponent with our defensive pressure and our offensive effectiveness. Providence is a well-coached team so we knew we had to play a complete game for 70 minutes.”
The Hawkeyes struck first in the 32nd minute as Sarah Drake scored to give Iowa a 1-0 halftime lead.
Kim Scraper, who has registered three multi-goal games this season, scored off a deflection in the 45th minute to push the Hawkeye advantage to 2-0. Geena Lesiak was credited with the assist. Minutes later at the 49:28 mark, Scraper notched her conference-leading eighth goal, giving the Black and Gold a 3-0 lead.
Less than a minute later at the 50:25 mark, Drake scored her second goal of the contest off a pass from the center of the circle to give Iowa a 4-0 advantage. Freshman Corinne Allen was credited with the assist. The Friars (1-4) added a late goal in the 65th minute to make the final score, 4-1.
The Hawkeyes dominated possession and maintained pressure on Providence throughout the contest. Iowa recorded 27 shots and 12 penalty corners, while the Friars tallied six and three, respectively.
Iowa returns to action tomorrow when it faces Brown at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The match is scheduled to start at noon (CT).
