IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa assistant softball coach Stacy May-Johnson will return to action for the USA Softball Team at the XVI Pan American Games in Gualajara, Mexico, on Oct. 17-23. Team USA has won six consecutive goal medals at the event.
The United States begins play in the Pan Am Games on Oct. 17, but the squad had three exhibition games against Texas A&M and Houston in preparation for the tournament. The Americans swept a doubleheader against the Aggies on Monday with 3-0 and 12-2 victories. Team USA followed it up with an 8-0 shutout win over Houston.
Team USA will become “official” members of the U.S. contingent of all athletes of all sports after completing processing today (Oct. 12) with the United States Olympic Committee. On Thursday, May-Johnson and Team USA will depart to Guadalajara and get settled into the athletes’ village.
On Monday, Oct. 17, the United States opens tournament play with a game against Venezuela, beginning a stretch of seven games in five days. The playoff round will be on Oct. 22, and the finals on Oct. 23.
USA Softball enters the Pan American Games following a Gold Medal finish at the World Cup of Softball VI in Oklahoma City, marking the fifth straight World Cup title for the Americans. Team USA has won seven Pan American Championships, including the last six. The program has a record of 78-3 since softball debuted in the 1979 Pan Am Games.
