Hawkeyes Fall In Lincoln

Oct. 20, 2011

LINCOLN, Neb. — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team battled through regulation and into extra time Thursday night in Lincoln, but the efforts were not enough as the team fell to the Cornhuskers, 1-0. Iowa (11-4-2, 3-4-2) allowed a late goal with 1:04 remaining in the first overtime period.

The Hawkeyes fired seven shots during the first half of play, but only two were on target. The team challenged Nebraska’s net four times in the second half. Iowa’s goalkeeper Emily Moran fended off nine attempts total, five in the second 45-minute period.

With just over a minute left on the clock in the first 10-minute overtime period, Nebraska’s Morgan Marlborough collected a pass from 15-yards out and hit the net with a five-yard chip shot over Moran’s hands.

“We worked hard today,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “Both teams had chances to score in regulation and overtime. Finishing shots is something that we will have to try and fine tune over the next couple days. Our effort level was great on the road. Our team worked really hard, and now we are looking forward to Homecoming and senior day on Sunday.”

Iowa returns to the Iowa Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon for its final home game of the season. The Hawkeyes welcome Northwestern for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Prior to the match, the six senior student-athletes on the team will be honored.
