Singles Results | Doubles Results
TULSA, Okla. – – University of Iowa senior Sonja Molnar and freshman Shelby Talcott completed the first two rounds of singles and doubles at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Molnar went 2-0 in singles, while Talcott won her opening match before falling to the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Natallia Pintusava of Minnesota. Molnar and Talcott teamed to record an 8-3 second round doubles victory after receiving a first round bye.
“It was a very good day for us overall,” said head coach Katie Dougherty. “We started strong with good execution in doubles. Shelby was right there with Pintusava and had a lot of opportunities that she didn’t convert on. We need another good start tomorrow.”
Molnar, the No. 2 overall seed, improved to 8-1 on the season with a pair of straight-set wins. The Guelph, Ontario, native opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Wichita State’s Valeria Brockman. She then topped Bonny Davidson of host Tulsa, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, will face Minnesota’s Julia Courter tomorrow in the third round.
Talcott won a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 decision against Tulsa’s Ewa Szatkowska in the first round before being eliminated from the tournament by Pintusava, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5. Pintusava was ranked No. 61 in the ITA preseason poll. Talcott is 6-3 in singles this season.
Molnar and Talcott defeated Damaschin/Fernandez of Wichita State, 8-3, to advance to the third round of the doubles draw.
Molnar and Talcott return to the court tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CT). The duo will face Tulsa’s Beaulieu/Enrique in doubles. Singles play will immediately follow doubles action. Live scoring for the event will be available on the women’s tennis schedule page at hawkeyesports.com.
