Evanston, Ill. —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded play at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill., Sunday, finishing the tournament with eight singles victories and two doubles wins.
“Overall, we had a pretty good showing, particularly in singles,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “This was good for some of our younger guys and less experienced guys to get that experience and some good results in the process.”
Juniors Mitch Beckert, Connor Gilmore and sophomore Michael Swank each earned consolation victories in singles to end the tournament on a high note. The championship matches in each flight were not contested.
Beckert defeated Bryant Dudzik of Toledo 6-1, 6-5 in Flight B singles consolations. Gilmore finished the tournament with two victories, knocking off DePaul’s Josh Dancu 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-8 in the Flight C singles consolation semifinals. Swank also finished the tournament with two wins after defeating Northern Illinois’ Bryant Poggensee-Wei 6-0, 6-2 in Flight D singles consolation play.
Junior Garret Dunn had a singles victory in Flight A and senior Christopher Speer won two matches in Flight C singles to win his tenth consecutive match earlier in the tournament.
The Hawkeyes will cap off the fall season with the Big Ten Indoor Singles/Doubles Tournament. Iowa will host the event at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Oct. 28-31.
