Editor’s Note: The Rise Up series is a set of articles featuring University of Iowa Track & Field athletes who have risen up on the track, in the classroom, or in the community.
IOWA CITY, Iowa — The words “Rise Up” resonate differently with each individual. To Iowa’s Majesty Tutson, this year’s track and field team slogan means committing to and achieving goals. Tutson’s dedication to that philosophy has helped her excel in all aspects of life.
The Iowa City native and graduate of Iowa City High School competed for one of the most dominant high school class 4A track teams in the state of Iowa from 2006-09. With the high level of talent at City High, Tutson was forced to earn her spot on the varsity squad. By her senior season, she had become one of Iowa’s elite high school throwers in both shot put and discus, earning a Drake Relays championship flag in the discus competition.
Not only did Tutson’s hard work lead to success on the track, but it transferred into the classroom, where she was an all-academic honoree.
When it came time to selecting a college, Tutson wanted a place that would push her to achieve her potential both academically and athletically. That place turned out to be the University of Iowa, where she qualified for the outdoor NCAA West Regionals in the discus as a Hawkeye freshman.
During her sophomore season, Tutson continued to rise up on the track. She finished runner-up in the discus at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and earned an invitation to NCAA West Regionals for the second straight year.
Her accomplishments are a result of her strong work ethic, which has garnered attention from her coaches and peers.
“Majesty has risen up athletically, culminating this past spring with a runner-up performance and school record in the discus” said Iowa head track and field coach Layne Anderson. “She is a great leader through her work ethic. She is well liked and, more importantly, well respected by her peers.”
Entering her junior season, Tutson is hungry for more success. Currently ranked 32nd in discus, Majesty continues to use her drive and passion as the stepping-stone for her to rise up above the competition.
Come out and cheer on Majesty and the rest of the Iowa track and field teams Saturday, December 3rd at the Black and Gold Intrasquad meet. Field events begin at 4 p.m. with running events to follow at 5:30 p.m. at the UI Recreation Building.
