NEW YORK CITY – The University of Iowa Track and Field team sent six throwers to compete in the New Balance Invite in New York City this weekend. The team rallied behind senior Matt Banse, who threw for a personal best in the weight throw.

Seniors Banse and Ryan Lamparek represented the men’s team in the weight throw. Banse came in second with a personal best throw of 66-10 ¾ (20.39m). That distance ranks third all-time at Iowa. Lamparek was close behind finishing seventh with a throw of 59-9 ½ (18.22m).

“It was exciting to see Matt [Banse] make a breakthrough today,” said coach Scott Cappos. “The women had a good day as well, but I think we are ready to step it up. All in all I think it was a good performance.”

Senior Majesty Tutson (56-4 ½; 17.18m) and freshman Annemie Smith (55-11 ¼, 17.05m) finished 20th and 21st, respectively in the women’s weight throw. Sophomores Ashlyn Gulvas and Jasmine Simpson also competed for the Hawkeyes. Gulvas reached the 54-3 ¾ (16.55m) mark to finish 26th, while Simpson finished 43rd with a toss of 50-9 ½ (15.48m).

The Hawkeyes will return to action Feb. 10-11 at the Tyson Invite in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Cyclone Classic in Ames, Iowa.
