IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team broke school records in the 400-medley relay, 400 IM and 100 back at Friday’s finals session of the 2012 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships.

“We had a tremendous night,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “We started off breaking the 400-medley relay school record and in the process the lead off leg (100 back) re-broke a school record that was broken this morning by Danielle Carty. Daniela Cubelic broke the record again and got a time of 53.63, which is just shy of what got into NCAA’s last year. When you’re down to NCAA qualifying, they are world-class times.”

The quartet of Daniela Cubelic, Karolina Wartalowicz, Abby Tuchscherer and Danielle Carty opened Friday’s finals session with a record-setting 400-medley relay. Cubelic led off the relay and broke her previous school record in the 100 back with a time of 53.63. The relay posted a time of 3:40.35 for a new school record and finished ninth overall.

Freshman Becky Stoughton broke her previous school record in the 400 IM (4:16.01) during the morning preliminaries with a time of 4:13.62. She qualified for the finals championship heat and broke her school record from the morning with a time of 4:12.34. The Peoria, Ill., native finished fourth overall.

Iowa had three swimmers in the `C’ final of the 100 fly. Tuchscherer won the heat to place 17th overall with a collegiate best time of 54.67, which ranks second in school history. Audrey Kumm placed 20th overall with a collegiate best time of 55.28 that ranks fourth on Iowa’s all-time top performers list. Aiste Dobrovolskaite finished 21st in the event with a time of 55.46. Dobrovolskaite posted a personal best time of 55.10 during the preliminaries, which ranks third in school history.

“We just missed the 100 fly school record but we broke the 400 IM recordby Becky, which was one more school record for her,” added Long.

Wartalowicz competed in the `C’ final of the 100 breast. The Oswego, Ill., tied for 17th in the event with a time of 1:02.91, which ranks third in school history.

Cubelic and Carty both represented the Hawkeyes in the championship final of the 100 back. Cubelic touched the wall sixth in a time of 54.17, while Carty finished in seventh place with a time of 54.34. Carty claimed a personal best time of 54.25 at the preliminaries.

Veronica Rydze won the consolation event of the of the three-meter springboard with a score of 346.10. Abby Grilli also qualified for the consolations and finished 15th overall with a score of 270.95.

All-in-all it has been a great night,” commented Long. “We had great diving earlier today. Veronica didn’t make it into finals but this is such a tremendously competitive league. She stepped up and won the consolations, which is a very difficult thing to do and she really showed her maturity and athletic ability. It’s was a great night and we are in the team race. It’s not at the title like we want to do as a program eventually, but historically this is a tremendous night for us. It’s the beginning of a process to really breakthrough. We are happy.”

The Championships will conclude on Saturday with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. Finals will follow at 6:30 p.m.
