Seniors Honored at Last Dual Meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 14th-ranked University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team hosted Western Illinois Friday night for the final dual meet of the season at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The Hawkeyes honored five seniors at the event as they ended their dual meet careers as Hawkeyes. Iowa crushed Western Illinois 123-86.

“We have an outstanding senior class and they have been outstanding for this program,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “It’s nice to recognize them at their last dual meet as a Hawkeye. We have the Big Ten’s coming up and the senior class will be a big impact at the meet.”

To kick off their final dual meet as Hawkeyes, four Iowa seniors teamed-up to win the 400-medley relay. Seniors Paul Gordon, Sean Swibes, Brian Tremml and Ryan Phelan won the event in a time of 3:26.81.

The Hawkeyes dominated the 200 free, placing one, two, three and four. Patrick Weigand won the event with a time of 1:41.62. Manuel Belzer touched the wall second in time of 1:43.35, while Grant Betulius finished third (1:44.69) and Brian Donatelli placed fourth (1:47.32).

Seniors Gordon and Phelan each collected individual first place finishes. Phelan won the 50 fly in a time of 22.95. Gordon was the fastest swimmer in the 50 free with a time of 20.55.

Iowa won the last four individual events of the night. Senior Duncan Partridge posted a first place finish in the 100 free with a time of 46.90. Byron Butler won the 50 back in a time of 22.87 and right after Noser won the 500 free with a time of 4:40.83. Senior Swan Swibes won the last individual event of the night with a time of 26.70 in the 50 breast.

Avery Dylan represented the Hawkeye divers at the meet. He placed second on both the one-meter (249.53) and three-meter (227.33) springboard.

Partridge, Gordon, Phelan and Tremmel concluded the competition with a victory in the 200 free relay. The senior squad posted a time of 1:22.95.

Iowa returns to action on Feb. 22-55 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center for the 2012 Men’s Swimming and Diving Big Ten Championships.
