CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Youngstown State Sunday in a back-and-forth game that lasted 10 innings and four hours and 31 minutes, 16-15. The Hawkeyes won on a game-ending pinch-hit double by Taylor Zeutenhorst. Iowa scored at least one run in every inning except the first two frames. The game was played at Raymond C. Hand Park as part of the Austin Peay/Riverview Inn Classic.
The Iowa offense belted out a season-high 20 hits, including six extra-base hits. Freshman Ryan Rumpf led the way with four hits (4-for-7), two RBI and a triple. Six other Hawkeyes, Mike McQuillan (2-for-6 with an RBI), Jake Mangler (2-for-6 with a career-high four RBI), Dan Sheppard (3-for-6 with two RBI), Keith Brand (2-for-4 with an RBI), Jake Yacinich (3-for-3 with two RBI) and Kris Goodman (2-for-6), tallied multi-hit games.
Youngstown State (0-10) struck first with a single run in the top of the first. The Penguins used a lead-off double and an RBI single to grab the early lead. The visitors added to their lead in the top of the second with an RBI single to left to make the score 2-0. In the third, Youngstown State used five hits to plate three runs and take a 5-0 advantage.
The Hawkeyes (3-6) answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-2. In the fourth, Mangler singled to left field with one away. The freshman later scored on a two-out RBI triple to right by Rumpf, cutting the score to 5-3.
Youngstown State answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-3.
Iowa responded, scoring four in the bottom of the fifth to cut the score to 8-7. Brand tallied an RBI double and later in the frame with the bases loaded, Mangler smacked a double down the left field line to score three.
The Penguins pushed across a single run in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded walk to push their lead to 9-7.
The Hawkeyes evened it up at 9-9 with a two-RBI double by Yacinich in the bottom of the sixth.
Youngstown State answered with four runs in the top of the seventh to regain a 13-9 advantage.
Iowa tallied a run in the bottom half of the seventh on an RBI single by Sheppard to cut the lead to 13-10. The Hawkeyes then took their first lead at 14-13 in the bottom of the eighth with four runs.
Youngstown State regained the lead at 15-14 with a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth.
The Hawkeyes tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Brand crossed home plate on a balk, sending the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Chett Zeise walked to open the frame. With Zeise on second and two down, Zeutenhorst, the pinch-hitter, roped a double down the right field line to give Iowa the 16-15 victory.
Sasha Kuebel started and took a no-decision. The freshman pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits. He struck out two.
Rumpf earned the win for Iowa. He opened the game as the Hawkeyes’ designated hitter before moving to the mound in the 10th. Rumpf pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed no hits. He struck out two while recording his first career victory.
Andrew Hanse, Taylor Kaufman, Phil Keppler, Andrew Hedrick, Patrick Lala, Tim Fangman, and Nick Hibbing also saw action out of the Hawkeye bullpen.
Youngstown State’s Erik Oklseon took the loss. He pitched one and two-thirds, allowing two runs on two hits.
Iowa continues action next Saturday when it travels to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational for its annual spring trip. The Hawkeyes open with Georgetown at 1 p.m. (CT) in Winter Haven, Fla.
