IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Northwestern Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
Both starting pitchers struck out nine batters, but it was Northwestern who got the timely hits and ultimately win the second game of the three-game weekend set. Northwestern starter Brandon Magallones improved to 4-0 on the season after throwing seven innings of shutout baseball, striking out nine while walking only one. Iowa starter Matt Dermody also sat down nine batters, but yielded three runs (two earned) on five hits in five and a third innings to take the hard-luck loss.
“Both pitchers threw the ball well today,” said Iowa head coach Jack Dahm. “Unfortunately, we didn’t give Matt [Dermody] any offensive support. We have to do a better job up-and-down the order competing. We didn’t put pressure on Northwestern today like we needed to. We’ll need to make a change in the lineup tomorrow to get more offense.”
Northwestern (8-13, 1-1) scored two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 advantage. Walker Moses roped a two-out RBI double to left center to score Jack Havey, who walked to start the frame. Colby Everett then slapped a single through the left side to score Moses.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth on an Everett RBI single up the middle scoring Nick Linne, who reached base earlier in the inning on a Hawkeye fielding error.
Iowa’s best opportunities to score were in the second and fourth innings. Chett Ziese was stranded on second base in the second inning after a one-out double down the left field line, while the Hawkeyes left the bases loaded in the fourth.
Iowa (8-11, 1-1) senior lead-off hitter Mike McQuillan accounted for half of Iowa’s offense, collecting three of the team’s six hits.
Andrew Hanse, Taylor Kaufman and Nick Hibbing pitched a combined three and two-third innings out of the Hawkeye bullpen, allowing no runs and striking out five.
The rubber game of the three-game series will take place tomorrow. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. at Duane Banks Field. Admission is only $3 for adults and free for students.
