FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Iowa track and field team kicked off the 2012 outdoor season with day one of Arkansas Spring Invitational Friday. Senior Matt Banse started off the weekend for the Hawkeyes with a first place finish in the hammer throw.

Banse, a senior from Strawberry Point, Iowa, took the title in the hammer throw with his toss of 194-3 (59.20m). Junior Ben Stancombe also competed in the event. Stancombe finished second with a throw of 191-2 (58.26m).

Sophomores Ashlyn Gulvas and Jasmine Simpson competed in the hammer throw for the Hawkeye women. Gulvas finished seventh with a toss of 172-8 (52.62m), while Simpson’s throw of 168-1 (51.47m) secured an 11th place finish.

“We had a pretty good start tonight,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. “I think coach Cappos was happy with both the women and the men. This was a great way to start to our weekend.”

Day two of the Arkansas Spring Invitational is set to begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
