Box Score

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa men’s tennis player Garret Dunn continued to lead the Hawkeyes in singles, but it wasn’t enough for Iowa to defeat a ranked Purdue squad. The No. 72 Boilermakers (8-10, 2-4) beat Iowa (1-17, 0-7), 6-1, on the Klotz Outdoor Tennis Courts despite Dunn’s win.

“We’re having a few individual bright spots every match now, but it hasn’t been consistent enough from everyone,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “In this year’s Big Ten, that’s not enough to win.”

Dunn improved his team best singles record with a victory against Krisztian Krockso in No. 4 singles. After a narrow 7-6 win in the first set, the Tempe, Ariz., native cruised to a 6-2 win in the second match to earn the win in straight sets. Dunn now has seven dual singles wins this year.

Coming into the match riding momentum from a No. 2 singles win against Indiana, senior Will Vasos stayed hot with a 6-1 advantage in the first set over Syzmon Tatarczyk in No. 2 singles. Tatarczyk would rally for the win by claiming the second set 6-4 and the super tiebreaker 10-5.

The Hawkeyes were competitive in doubles play and each Iowa team took a lead in their match at some point, but the Boilermakers would sweep doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. Despite winning three straight games to make a comeback in No. 1 doubles, Dunn and sophomore Michael Swank would fall, 8-5. Vasos and freshman Matt Hagan were defeated in a back and forth No. 2 doubles match by a final of 8-6. Senior Tom Mroziewicz and sophomore Jonas Dierckx jumped out to a 5-2 lead in No. 3 doubles play, but Purdue would rally for an 8-6 comeback victory.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Michigan next week, competing at Michigan on April 14th and at Michigan State on April 15th. Both matches are slated to begin at noon.
