CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field teams sent six athletes to the Messersmith Invite Friday afternoon on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. The Hawkeyes rallied behind first place finishes by sophomores Carisa Leacock and Courtney Fritz.

Leacock competed in both the long jump and triple jump for the Hawkeyes. The sophomore took the title in the long jump when she recorded a mark of 18-11 ¾ (5.78m). Leacock captured a second place finish in the triple jump with a personal best jump of 38-01 ¼ (11.61m). That mark ranks sixth all-time at Iowa.

Fritz took the title in the discus. Fritz recorded a personal best toss of 154-01 (46.96m). That mark ranks seventh all-time at Iowa. Sophomore Ashlyn Gulvas also competed in the event. Gulvas finished fifth with a toss of 131-10 (40.18m).

Freshman Annemie Smith recorded a personal best performance in the hammer throw. Smith’s toss of 187-07 (57.19m) was good enough for a second place finish. That mark ranks second all-time at Iowa. Gulvas also competed in the event. Gulvas finished third with a toss of 180-08 (55.06m).

Kelsey Mims sprinted to a third place finish in the 400 meters. The senior clocked a time of 58.05.

Sophomore Andrew Carman competed in the discus for the Hawkeye men. Carmen’s toss of 167-09 (51.14m) was good enough for a sixth place finish.

“I thought it was a successful outing,” said head track and field coach Layne Anderson. “We had some outstanding personal best and top ten all-time performances.”

The Hawkeyes will return to action with the Big Ten Championships May 11-13 in Madison, Wis.
