IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa incoming baseball recruit Ryan Borucki was selected in the Major League Baseball’s 2012 First-Year Player Draft Tuesday afternoon by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 15th round (475th pick). Borucki is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound left-handed pitcher from Mundelein, Ill.
Borucki is the highest player, who signed with the Hawkeyes, to be drafted since outfielder Caleb Curry was picked in the 14th round (417th selection) by the San Francisco Giants. Borucki is the second Hawkeye recruit in as many years to be selected by Toronto; Derrick Loveless of Solon, Iowa, was selected in the 27th round (827) by the Blue Jays a year ago.
Borucki will have the option to sign a professional contract or play for the Hawkeyes next season.
Borucki is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Illinois according to Prep Baseball Report. Borucki, who attends Mundelein High School, finished 7-1 as a junior with a 1.20 ERA and 57 strikeouts en route to all-conference, all-Lake County and all-academic honors. He helped lead his team to a 4A sectional championship in 2010 and a regional championship in 2011. He’s also an honor roll student and all-academic team member.
Under Dahm, 27 Hawkeyes have been drafted. Twenty-one players have been drafted in the past six years.
