DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team competed in day three of the NCAA Championships Friday. The Hawkeyes were led by two stellar performances from team captains Erik Sowinski (800 meters) and Troy Doris (triple jump).

Sowinski ended his Iowa career with a race he will never forget. The senior ran a career best 800-meter time of 1:45.90 to finish second. He is the first athlete in school history to break the 1:46 mark. Sowinski previously held the school record of 1:46.09.

“I never would have imagined that I would take second place,” said Sowinski. “At Iowa I have grown a lot. It has been a great four years.”

Senior Doris leapt to a fifth place finish in the triple jump. Doris reached the mark of 54-1 (16.48m) on his fourth attempt to reach the victory stand. Florida junior Omar Craddock won the event with a leap of 55-6 ¼ (16.92m).

“Our captains did it for us once again,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. “They will leave a legacy at Iowa that will be remembered forever.”

Matt Banse also competed on the day. The senior’s hammer throw toss of 197-11 (60.33m) earned him a 20th place finish.

Senior McKenzie Melander will be the last Hawkeye to hit the blue oval. Melander will compete in the 5,000 meters at 12:19 p.m. Saturday.
