Hawkeyes Open Pritzker Era in Des Moines

THIS WEEK: The University of Iowa women’s rowing team opens its fall season at the Head of the Des Moines. Iowa will begin competition at 10:15 a.m.

THE RACE: In Saturday’s regatta, rowers will race down a 5.05 kilometer stretch of the Des Moines River. The Hawkeyes will compete in the women’s collegiate 8’s (10:15 a.m.), collegiate single (11:50 a.m.), collegiate pair (1:15 p.m.), collegiate novice 8’s (1:40 p.m.) and the collegiate 4’s (2:55 p.m.).

EVENT INFORMATION: The Des Moines Rowing Club is hosting the 29th annual Head of the Des Moines. Fans will be able to catch race finishes at Prospect Park.

NEW HAWKEYE IN CHARGE: Steve Pritzker is in his first season as head coach of the University of Iowa women’s rowing program. Pritzker, who is only the second head coach in program history, comes to Iowa after a successful career at the University of Virginia.

While at Virginia, Pritzker won two NCAA championships as associate head coach (2010, 2012), along with two runner-up finishes (2005, 2007). Virginia won eight ACC titles in his nine years with the program.

Pritzker was named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010.

Pritzker was a four-year letterwinner at Yale University and earned his master’s degree from Virginia.

PRITZKER ADDS 3 TO STAFF: Julie Quoss, Bridget Fowler, and Sheila Rinozzi join current assistant Beth Redfearn on Pritzker’s staff.

Quoss, who will coach the novice squads, spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Fowler competed for Pritzker at Virginia from 2005-09 and was a member of three ACC championship teams. Rinozzi was a first team All-Big Ten selection at Iowa. She won the petite finals at the Big Ten Championships.

HOME OF THE HAWKEYES: The P. Sue Beckwith, M.D., Boathouse was dedicated September 18, 2009. The new state of the art facility for the Hawkeyes is located within the city of Iowa City’s Terrell Mill Park, next to the Iowa River.

HEAD OF THE IOWA COMING UP: The UI women’s rowing team will host the annual Head of the Iowa on Oct. 28. The Head of the Iowa will be hosted at Lower City Park and the Beckwith Boathouse.

QUOTING COACH PRITZKER: “We are excited to begin the new year,” said head rowing coach Steve Pritzker. “The entire squad has been working hard trying to make changes and while we know it is early in the year, it will be a good change of pace to race other teams. Both the Varsity and Novice squads are excited to begin the season.”
