Iowa Wins Fall Opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team downed Black Hawk College, 12-3, in its fall opener Sunday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. The Hawkeyes pounded out 15 hits in the victory.

Iowa plated at least one run in six of the nine innings. The Hawkeyes put up two runs in the first and fourth innings and a five spot in the eighth.

Four UI players tallied multi-hit games. Senior Dan Sheppard led the charge, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Junior Taylor Zeutenhorst went 2-for-3 with a run and sophomore Jake Yacinich went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Junior Trevor Kenyon collected a pair of hits, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI against his former team.

Iowa used eight pitchers in the game — Matt Dermody, Andrew Hanse, Josh Martsching, Ben Bergman, Ryan Rumpf, Taylor Kaufman and Nick Hibbing. Hanse tossed two innings.

The Hawkeyes return to action next weekend in Omaha, facing Creighton on Saturday and Sunday.
