STANFORD, Calif. — The 10th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team downed Pacific, 6-0, Sunday at Stanford’s Varsity Field Hockey Turf in Stanford, Calif. Junior Aubrey Coleman tallied a hat trick and four different Hawkeyes scored. Iowa controlled Pacific throughout the contest, outshooting the Tigers 44-7.
“We got off to a really good start today,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We had some really nice goals and contributions from a lot of different people. Overall, it was a great way to respond from the Stanford game and get back on track. It was very positive.”
The Hawkeyes got on the board at the 2:13 mark when junior Marike Stribos scored her third goal of the season — an unassisted strike.
“Marike played really well and controlled the attack,” said Griesbaum.
Junior Dani Hemeon gave the Hawkeyes a 2-0 advantage during the 14th minute, finding the goal for the second time this season.
Iowa scored its third goal of the contest two minutes later, as Coleman found the back of the net after rebounding a teammate’s miss.
Freshman Natalie Cafone extended Iowa’s margin to 4-0, scoring her third goal of the season at the 28:40 mark. Junior Kelsey Mitchell was credited with an assist on the goal.
Coleman scored both of Iowa’ second period goals to record her first career hat trick. Her first strike came during the 50th minute of play, giving the Hawkeyes a 5-0 lead. She then added her third goal at the 53:58 mark to make the final score 6-0.
Senior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw made three stops en route to recording her second shutout of the season.
Griesbaum said senior Sarah Drake had a major impact against Pacific, even though she didn’t record a point.
“Sarah played awesome,” said Griesbaum. “She didn’t score a goal today, but she played really solid.”
The Hawkeyes improved to 7-0 all-time against Pacific and 5-0 all-time in meetings against the Tigers at neutral sites.
Iowa plays its final game of a three-game road trip Monday against UC Davis. The game will begin at 1 p.m. (CT) at Stanford’s Varsity Field Hockey Turf. The two teams have never met.
