IOWA CITY, Iowa — The 12th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team lost a 2-1 decision to No. 14 Michigan (12-5, 4-2 Big Ten) on Friday at Grant Field. It was the Hawkeyes first home defeat of the season.

Iowa (12-5, 3-2 Big Ten) trailed, 1-0, after Michigan’s Lauren Thomas found the back of the goal off a penalty corner. Leslie Smith and Liesl Morris assisted on the play.

Neither team scored for the rest of the opening period.

The Hawkeyes evened the score, 1-1, two minutes into the second half, as sophomore Dani Hemeon connected on her eighth goal of the season after collecting a teammate’s miss.

Michigan regained the lead, 2-1, in the 39th minute. Samantha Gray fired the ball from outside the circle, allowing Emy Guttman to deflect the ball into the goal.

Hemeon appeared to tie the score at the 14:34 mark via a penalty corner, but it was deemed that the ball was too high, and the goal was called off.

The Wolverines were able to hold off the Hawkeyes for the remainder of the contest, securing a 2-1 victory.

Michigan’s Haley Jones was the winning goalkeeper, making 10 saves. Kathleen McGraw made three stops for Iowa. She fell to 12-5 this season.

Iowa ended the contest with a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.

The Hawkeyes play their final regular season game Sunday. Iowa will host eighth-ranked Northwestern at noon (CT) at Grant Field. The game will be streamed live on BTN.com. Admission is free.
