Oct. 31, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sophomore Ian Vandersee has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after claiming a share of first place at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate earlier this week. This is the first Big Ten weekly award for the West Des Moines, Iowa, native.

Vandersee’s winning 54-hole score of 206 (-7) is tied for the best three-round score in Iowa history. His first round 65 (-6) is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history.

After the opening round 65, Vandersee carded a second round mark of 70 (-1) and entered the final round one stroke off the lead. He started his final round with bogeys on three of his first five holes, but settled in to make nine straight pars.

Vandersee birdied the 15th hole to remain one stroke off the lead heading into the final three holes. He made par on 16 and 17 and needed a birdie on 18 to grab a share of the individual title. Vandersee reached the par-5 finishing hole in two shots and two-putted from 40 feet to secure a share of medalist honors.

Vandersee is the 50th Hawkeye in school history to earn medalist honors. In six years as head coach, Mark Hankins has guided four players to a total of seven individual titles.

The Royal Oaks Intercollegiate was the final fall event for the Hawkeyes. Iowa enters its winter break with team top-five finishes at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the Rod Myers Invitational and the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. The Hawkeyes return to action Feb. 8-9 at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
