Women’s Golf Set to Compete in Hoosier Fall Invite

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team will complete its 2012 fall season at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Florence, Ind. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Belterra Casino and Resort, a 6,200 yard, par-72 course. Play will begin Saturday with 36 holes of competition, starting with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.

“We are looking forward to competing in Indiana. The team has had another solid week of practice and our confidence is really high. We felt good about our play in Missouri and we’ll continue to learn a lot each time we go out to compete. The team goal remains the same, and that is to continue to get better in each tournament. Right now, we have some good momentum heading into this weekend.

THE LINE-UP
The Hawkeyes will send Kristi Cardwell, Lauren English, Shelby Phillips, Briana Midkiff, and Gigi DiGrazia to compete in Florence this weekend. In addition, Amy Ihm will compete as an individual.

THE COMPETITION
The Hawkeyes will compete against 11 teams: Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Illinois State, Ball State, Boston College, ETSU, Deleware, Augusta State, and Mizzou.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes competed in the Johnie Imes Invitational placing sixth of 19 teams.The Hawkeyes finished the tournament with its best 18-hole round of the season. Iowa’s final round score of 293 (+5) was its first sub-300 round of the season and is tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole team mark in school history. Iowa’s three-round total of 896 (+32) is tied for the fifth lowest 54-hole team score in school history. In addition, the 36-hole score of 594 (+18) is the fourth lowest in Iowa women’s golf history.

ENGLISH FIRES CAREER BEST
Sophomore Lauren English carded a final round score of 68 (-4) to tie for eighth place individually, the second top-10 finish of her career. Enlgish’s final round 68 is the second lowest 18-hole score in the Iowa women’s golf record book. English was bogey free in her final round, carding 14 pars to go along with four birdies. English’s three-round score of 219 (+3) is the best 54-hole score of her career and is tied for fourth best in school history. Her 143 (+1) 36-hole score is also tied for second lowest in school history.

PHILLIPS CARDS FIRST CAREER HOLE-IN-ONE
Sophomore Shelby Phillips recorded her first career hole-in-one during the first round of play at the Johnie Imes Invite. Phillips began her round four-over par through the first six holes but turned things around when she aced the par-3, 16th, with a 9-iron from 112 yards out. Phillips finished the tournament with a three-round total of 224 (+8) which tied for 20th individually.
