MINNEAPOLIS — The No. 19 University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team dropped a 165.5-132.5 decision at 13th-ranked Minnesota on Friday night at the Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Hawkeyes posted victories in six events against the Golden Gophers.
“It was a hard fought dual,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “We will build off the meet as we prepare for the championship season.”
Senior Jordan Huff posted two first place individual finishes in the 100 and 200 free, while also swimming on the winning 400 freestyle relay. He posted a time of 45.01 to finish in the top spot in the 100 before touching out in 1:39.22 in the 200. Both times are season-best performances.
Huff, sophomore Brian Donatelli, freshman David Ernstsson and junior Gianni Sesto closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. The quartet posted a time of 2:59.78.
Freshman Roman Trussov posted two first place finishes, winning the 100 and 200 breast. He won the 100 with a time of 55.08 before posting a time of 2:00.60 to finish first in the 200. The Hawkeyes’ Korey Schneider and Andrew Marciniak finished fourth and fifth in the 100 with times of 56.34 and 56.53, respectively, while Marciniak was also the runner-up in the 200 in 2:02.70.
Junior Dustin Rhoads swam to the victory in the 100 back, touching the wall at 48.55 to win the event. Sophomore Grant Betulius and freshman Andrew Parker finished in second and third, respectively, with times of 48.95 and 50.52. All three times are season-bests. Rhoads also finished third in the 200 back in a season-best 1:48.90.
Junior Tyler Lentz posted a pair of second place finishes on the evening. He posted a time of 1:49.19 in the 200 fly before swimming a time of 1:50.95 in the 200 IM. The Hawkeyes also got a runner-up finish from Byron Butler in the 100 fly. Butler finished with a time of 47.97 in the event, an NCAA `B’ qualifying and season-best performance.
Minnesota claimed the victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.06. Grant Betulius, Roman Trussov, Mitch Taylor, and Brian Donatelli placed second at 1:29.93.
Donatelli sprinted to a third place finish to lead Iowa in the 50 free. The sophomore posted a time of 20.81 in the event. In the longest race of the evening — the 1,000 free — junior Manuel Belzer finished third with a time of 9:21.45, a season-best.
The Golden Gophers posted victories in both the 1-and-3 meter spring board events. Iowa freshman Addison Boschult was the runner-up in the 1-meter with a score of 277.27, while also posting a third place finish in the 3-meter (271.80).
Iowa returns home Nov. 30 to host the Hawkeye Invitational. The competition will be prelims/finals format, with prelims starting at 10 a.m., and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
