Hawkeye Invitational – Complete Results
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Roman Trussov broke the school record and posted an NCAA “B” qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke during the final session of the 2012 Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Michigan won the three-day competition, accumulating 1,150 points, followed by Notre Dame (794), Iowa (606.5), Denver (478) and Wisconsin-Miwaukee (260.5).
After swimming to a third place finish in the “A” final of the 200 breaststroke, Trussov took to the pool a second time for a time trial. He went on to clock a time of 1:56. 76 to break teammate Andrew Marciniak’s school record of 1:57.88 by more than a second.
“He was pretty frustrated because his goggles filled up with water, which basically blinded him when he swam,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “He said he wanted to do it again, so we waited 30 minutes and he swam it. Hats off to him, that’s a tough position to be in. That’s a sign of good things to come.”
During the “A” final in the 200 breast, Trussov placed third overall with a time of 1:58.77. Marciniak and freshman Quillan Oak also swam in the heat, finishing fifth and eighth, respectively. Marciniak’s time of 1:59.17 was an NCAA “B” mark, while Oak touched in 2:02.59. In the prelims, Oak went faster, posting a time of 2:00.83, the eighth-fastest time in the UI record books.
Four Hawkeyes advanced to the “A” final of the 200 backstroke. Senior Byron Butler led the trio with a runner-up finish in a personal best 1:43.97, an NCAA “B” qualifying standard. The time ranks as the second fastest in school history.
Freshman Andrew Parker finished sixth with a time of 1:47:07 — the ninth best time in the record books — while sophomore Grant Betulius (1:47.65) and junior Dustin Rhoads (1:47.73) were seventh and eighth, respectively. Betulius (1:45.64) and Rhoads (1:46.54) both swam season-bests during the morning prelims.
Iowa closed out the Invitational with a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of freshman David Ernstsson, senior Jordan Huff and sophomores Brian Donatelli and Grant Betulius posted a time of 2:57.15. The Hawkeyes’ “B” team of freshman Jackson Allen, junior Gianni Sesto, Butler and freshman Luke Snow touched in 3:01.61.
Freshman Addison Boschult, competing in the platform for the first time in his career, tallied a third-place finish in the platform, accumulating 315 points. The total is the third best in school history and a zone diving qualifying mark.
“I am really proud of him,” said UI diving coach Todd Waikel. “He’s on track and has a lot of tower diving ahead of him. There is going to be a lot more of Addison on the tower to come.”
Junior Manuel Belzer tallied a fifth place finish in the 1,650 freestyle, posting a time of 15:38.60, and junior Tyler Lentz finished sixth in the 200 fly, in a season-best time of 1:48.71.
Iowa had five competitors finish among the top 16 in the 100 free with Huff leading the way with a seventh place showing in 45.04 in the “A” final. Ernstsson won the “B” final in 44.96 to finish ninth overall, while Donatelli (45.06), Sesto and Allen were 11th, 12th and 15th, respectively.
The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 17 facing Colorado College and Austin College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
