IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team opened its 2013 season against Ball State Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, defeating the Cardinals (0-2, 0-0 MAC) 193.375 to 193.125.

“We trained to start at a 195,” said Libby. “We fell below expectation. A win is a win, and we came in here to win. I am proud of how we fought back on the floor.”

Four freshmen — Alie Glover, Adara Griffin, Alyssa Lopez and Kyra Trowbridge — made their collegiate debuts.

Glover finished second in the all-around with a 38.475, while sophomore Sydney Hoerr earned third with a 38.400. Brittney Emmons of Ball State claimed the all-around title with a 38.525.

It was a strong start for Iowa on vault and bars. The GymHawks opened the meet on vault, totaling 48.525. Senior Maya Wickus won the event with a 9.800. Willis placed third with a 9.725.

Scoring improved as the Hawkeyes moved to bars and posted a 48.925. Hoerr, senior Emma Stevenson and Wickus shared the bar title (9.825).

Iowa struggled on beam, but sophomore Jessica Morreale finished strong for the Hawkeyes, winning the event with a 9.825. Iowa totaled 47.225.

In the final rotation, the Hawkeyes posted a 48.700 on floor to win the meet. Trowbridge captured the floor title with a 9.850.

The GymHawks return to action next weekend. Iowa will travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 14 Ohio State Saturday, Jan. 19. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. (CT) inside St. John Arena.
