Iowa City, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened its spring season at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex against Illinois State. Iowa fell to Illinois State, 5-2.
The Hawkeyes took down the Red Birds in doubles play as Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan defeated Brunskog and Torrellas of Illinois State, 8-3. Joey White and Chase Tomlins followed that up with an 8-6 victory to gain the lone doubles point. After the two Hawkeye victories sealed the doubles point, Garret Dunn and Michael Swank did not finish their match.
“It was a very close match, as all the individual scores would indicate,” head coach Steve Houghton said. “I thought we played decent for our first match, but obviously not good enough. I do think this team is a much improved team over last year.”
In singles action, Dunn defeated Wilson 6-4, 6-4 to claim the Hawkeyes lone victory in singles play. The Hawkeyes hit the courts again on Sunday as they face off against Loyola Marymount at 11 a.m. (CT).
