CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — It is more successful when the University of Iowa women’s basketball team goes on a hunt. Being hunted isn’t nearly as fruitful.
After going 6-0 this season against ranked opponents, the Hawkeyes slipped on the road during their first game after cracking the national rankings, 74-62, at Illinois on Thursday in front of 1,808 in Assembly Hall.
Both teams are 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference; Iowa is 16-6 overall, the Illini are 12-8.
“I want to congratulate Illinois,” UI head coach Lisa Bluder said. “They played a really good game defensively and offensively. It was a great game by them. They go to the free throw line and we couldn’t. We couldn’t draw fouls on them and that was not in our favor.”
Illinois made 13-of-19 free throws; Iowa made 1-of-2.
The Hawkeyes shot better from the field (45.8 percent to 41.7) and won the rebound battle by seven (38-31). But Iowa turned the ball over 27 times, resulting in 30 points by the Illini.

UI guards Samantha Logic and Jaime Printy shared team-high scoring honors with 13. Logic added 10 rebounds and six assists; Printy had three assists. But the duo also combined for 15 turnovers.
Melissa Dixon had the hot hand from outside making 3-of-6 3-point field goals and finishing with 11 points.
A layup by Logic gave the Hawkeyes a 50-47 lead with 10:35 remaining. Then Illinois finished on a 27-12 run, highlighted by a 14-2 spurt over the final 5:31.
The Illini made 11-of-24 3-point field goals.
Illinois, which entered the game averaging 19.5 fouls per game, committed just 10 against Iowa. The Hawkeyes were whistled 17 times, with 13 of those coming in the second half.
Illinois led 34-31 at halftime, grabbing a 10-point lead (31-21) with 4:51 left in the first period. Iowa had its share of the lead, opening its largest advantage at 20-14 following a 3-pointer by Printy.
Both team committed 12 turnovers during the first 20 minutes, and both teams shot well from outside. The Hawkeyes made 4-of-9 3-pointers, but the Illini were even hotter, sinking 8-of-16.
Iowa returns home Sunday to play Northwestern with tipoff at 1 p.m. (CT). It is the lone game in Carver-Hawkeye Arena during a four-game stretch that began with a road contest at Michigan on Jan. 27, and concluding with a road game at Minnesota on Feb. 7.
HAWKEYE QUICK-HITTERS
With four rebounds against Illinois, senior Morgan Johnson moved into seventh all-time in career rebounding at the UI. Johnson (792 career rebounds) is now tied for seventh with Krista VandeVenter and she passed Amy Herrig (789 career rebounds).
Sophomore Samantha Logic recorded a double-double, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. It is the 10th double-double of Logic’s Hawkeye career.
Freshman Kayla Timmerman scored six points off the bench, tying a season and career high.
