CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Sophomore pitcher Sasha Kuebel allowed two runs over eight innings for the University of Iowa baseball team in a 3-1 setback against No. 14 Oklahoma on Friday at the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

Kuebel scattered eight hits and struck out three Oklahoma batters. The St. Louis native limited a Sooner team that entered the contest hitting .325, while scoring nearly eight runs per game. Kuebel was bested by Oklahoma’s Dillon Overton. The lefthander threw eight scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out nine to improve to 3-0 this season.

Kuebel and Overton went toe-to-toe for the first five innings, as neither pitcher allowed a runner to get past second base. Oklahoma broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, as Craig Aikin scored on a Max White grounder to third.

The score remained 1-0 until Oklahoma (7-0) scored a run in both the eighth and ninth innings. White singled in Jack Mayfield in the eighth, while Anthony Hermelyn singled home Garrett Carey in the ninth.

The Hawkeyes (1-3) tried to make things interesting in the ninth against OU reliever Robert Tasin. With two outs, junior Taylor Zeutenhorst and sophomore Kris Goodman had back-to-back singles before Zeutenhorst crossed the plate on a passed ball. Iowa had runners at first and second base after sophomore Eric Toole drew a walk, but Tasin ended the Hawkeye rally with a strikeout to earn the save.

Goodman had three singles, finishing the game 3-of-4 at the plate to record his second three-hit game this season. The Apple Valley, Minn., native extended his hitting streak to four games, which matches a career-high. Fellow sophomore Jake Yacinich also stretched his hitting streak to four games after going 2-for-3.

The Hawkeyes continue play at the Kleberg Bank College Classic tomorrow against New Mexico. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT).
