CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Four runs in the top half of the 10th inning propelled the University of Iowa baseball team to a 6-2 victory over New Mexico on Saturday at the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

“I was happy the entire game with the way our guys competed,” said UI head coach Jack Dahm. “We learned a lot about our team today. That is how we are capable of playing. We continued to compete and stuck to our game plan.”

Sophomore Kris Goodman scored the go-ahead run with one out in the 10th, crossing the plate after a New Mexico wild pitch. Classmate Jake Yacinich plated the second run of the frame with a single to left field before sophomore Taylor Kaufman closed the scoring by hitting a double with the bases loaded to drive in two runs.

The Hawkeyes (2-3) faced an early deficit, as New Mexico pushed two runs across the plate in the first inning via Mitch Garver and Luke Campbell singles.

New Mexico (2-3) was held scoreless after the opening inning, as Iowa starter Matt Dermody allowed just three hits over the next five innings. The Norwalk, Iowa, native took a no-decision.

“New Mexico might be the best offensive team in the country, and I was very proud of our pitching staff,” Dahm said. “To hold that team to two runs is very, very impressive.”

Iowa evened the score, 2-2, in its half of the seventh inning. Sophomore Eric Toole got the Hawkeyes on the board, laying a squeeze bunt that scored Kaufman. Iowa tied the game in its next at-bat, as Goodman singled to center field to plate sophomore Nick Day.

Kaufman tossed the final four innings for the Hawkeyes, striking out three Lobos en route to his first win of the season.

Goodman and Yacinich both went 2-for-5 at the plate, extending their career-high hitting streaks to five games.

The Hawkeyes conclude play at the Kleberg Bank College Classic tomorrow, squaring off against host-Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. (CT).
