IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to Drake 5-2 Wednesday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Wednesday night. The loss ends the Hawkeyes six game winning streak.
“It was a tough loss against a very good Drake team,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “It’s no accident that they are ranked in the top 30.”
Iowa fell to Drake in doubles, losing two out of three matches. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank picked up the lone victory for the Hawkeyes in doubles action defeating Ghorbel and McKie, 8-6. Ghorbel and McKie were ranked 51st nationally in doubles. Joey White and Juan Estenssoro fell to Goodman and Mullis of Drake, 8-4. Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx lost a close match to Lott and Salibasic of Drake, 9-8 (7-5).
It took three sets but freshman Dominic Patrick earned another hard fought singles victory, this time over Lott of Drake by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Dierckx picked up another singles victory to improve his spring record to 7-1. Dierckx took down Goodman of Drake, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. All other Hawkeyes fell in singles action.
“This match makes it very clear we are right there with some of the top teams in the country and we just need to do a better job finishing off some individual matches,” said Houghton. “Overall, it was a loss but one which gives us a lot of confidence heading into our next couple matches.”
Iowa will hit the courts next in Champaign, Ill. as they face off against Illinois at 6 p.m.
