MADISON, Wis. — Not many teams win inside the Kohl Center, but that doesn’t lessen the sting of the University of Iowa men’s basketball team’s 74-70 double overtime loss at Wisconsin on Wednesday night.

“We were down 11 on the road, come back and get up nine,” said UI head coach Fran McCaffery. “That’s the upsetting thing, you’re up nine, you have to close it out.”

The Hawkeyes trailed by 11 points in the first half, but with 6:18 remaining, Iowa was in control. Iowa built a 51-42 lead, using a 13-2 spurt to turn the game in their favor.

“We were clicking, moving the ball and doing our keys, getting rebounds and holding them to one shot,” said senior Eric May, who scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds. “We have to be able to sustain it.”

The Badgers, however, wouldn’t wilt.

Wisconsin used a quick 8-0 spurt behind a Ben Brust 3-pointer, a Jared Berggren three-point play and a Ryan Evans layup to cut the deficit to 51-50 with 3:41 left. A layup by sophomore Aaron White gave Iowa a 53-50 lead with 3:17 remaining, but the Badgers kept coming, evening the game at 53 with 1:40 to play.

“To close that gap when we were down nine was really gutsy by our guys,” said Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan. “We made some shots, and it gave us a chance.”

With the game tied at 55, the Badgers got a defensive stop with less than a minute remaining, but a heady play by White — a fake out, steal, layup and eventual three-point play — gave the Hawkeyes a 58-55 advantage. Wisconsin got a break of its own when Traevon Jackson’s 3-pointer hit the front iron, bounced up and off the glass and in to tie the game with 21 seconds remaining.

The Hawkeyes drew up a play for sophomore Josh Oglesby with the game on the line, but his 3-point attempt was halfway down before rattling out and sending the game to overtime.

“We were right there,” said May. “It’s a couple of plays that make a difference in games.”

Oglesby knocked down a 3-pointer to account for the first points of the extra period, but two Jackson free throws with 1:15 remaining evened the game at 62, sending the game into a second overtime.

After trading free throws for the first four points of the second OT, Badger freshman Sam Dekker made a triple from the right wing to give Wisconsin a 67-64 lead with 1:37 left. Wisconsin then made its free throws down the stretch to hold off the Hawkeyes and snap Iowa’s three-game winning streak in the series.

Freshman Mike Gesell led a group of three Hawkeyes in double figures, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting. White netted 13 points, making 7-of-11 free throws, and junior Zach McCabe scored 10 points. Ten Iowa players scored, which led to a 33-8 advantage in bench points.

Both teams finished the game shooting 33.8 percent, but Wisconsin made two more 3-pointers. Iowa was 15-of-22 from the free throw line; the Badgers were 19-of-26. The Hawkeyes also won the rebounding battle, 51-49.

Brust paced Wisconsin, finishing with 18 points. Berggren had 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Evans and Jackson scored 15 and 13, respectively.

After playing to a 15 all tie over the first nine minutes, the Badgers used a 13-2 spurt to grab a 28-17 lead with 6:14 remaining in the first half. Wisconsin’s final point came on a Traevon Jackson free throw following a McCaffery technical foul.

The “T” ignited the Hawkeyes. Iowa closed out the half on a 12-3 run to pull to within 31-29 at the break. The spurt began with a 7-0 run with four points coming at the free throw stripe followed by an Oglesby 3-pointer to make the score 28-24.

Following a Badger lay-up, Oglesby connected on his second triple to make the score 30-27. Sophomore Gabe Olaseni closed out the half with a two-handed dunk after May drew a pair of defenders before finding Olaseni for the easy slam.

Iowa trailed 31-29 despite getting just two points from leading scorers Roy Devyn Marble and White, as the duo combined to shoot 0-of-9 from the field. The Hawkeyes shot 35.5 percent (11-of-31) over the opening 20 minutes, while Wisconsin made 12-of-28 attempts (42.9 percent).

The Hawkeyes (14-9, 3-7) return to action Saturday at 3:36 p.m. (CT), hosting Northwestern inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
