AMES, Iowa – The University of Iowa track and field team recorded four personal best finishes at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday. The Iowa State Classic was held at the Lied Recreational Center on the campus of Iowa State University. No team scores were kept at the event.

Senior Ryan Weir and junior Nathan Prom finished second and third, respectively, in the men’s 800 meters. Weir crossed the line in a personal best time of 1:49.28, just beating out Prom who clocked a personal best time of 1:49.29. Weir’s time ranks third all-time at Iowa, while Prom ranks fourth.

Junior Ashlyn Gulvas recorded a personal best toss in the women’s weight throw. Gulvas’ throw of 61-6 ¼ (18.75m) was good enough for a fourth-place finish. Her mark ranks second all-time at Iowa. Jasmine Simpson also competed in the event. The junior finished fifth with a toss of 60-10 ½ (18.30m).

Sophomore Kevin Lewis ran to a fourth place finish in the men’s 5,000. Lewis crossed the line in a personal best time of 14:27.28. That time ranks 10th all-time at Iowa. Senior Jon Michael Brandt finished eighth in the event with a time of 14:43.62.

“Reordering our top ten performance list was certainly a highlight for us this weekend,” Larry Wieczorek, director of track and field, said. “That’s a good measuring stick that our program keeps getting better. It was a particularly great weekend for our 800 meter runners.”

Carisa Leacock earned a third-place finish in the women’s triple jump. The junior posted a leap of 39-11 ¼ (12.17m).

Brandon Oest captured a sixth-place finish in the men’s high jump. The senior recorded a leap of 6-8 ¼ (2.04m). Freshman Kevin Spejcher finished eighth in the event when he cleared the 6-6 ¼ (1.99m) mark.

Sophomores Sam Fourman and Ben Witt competed in the men’s mile. Fourman ran to an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:12.49, while Witt clocked a time of 4:16.28 to finish 13th.

Lisa Gordon ran to a ninth-place finish in the women’s 3,000 meters. The freshman posted a time of 9:47.63. Graduate student Lauren Scott (12th; 10:00.05) and senior Kelsey Hart (13th; 10:15.83) also competed in the event.

Gabe Hull earned a seventh-place finish in the men’s shot put. The sophomore recorded a toss of 53-7 ½ (16.34m).

Freshman Taylor Lynch recorded a 10th place finish in the women’s 200 meters. Lynch crossed the line in 26.13.

The men’s 1,600-meter relay team of freshman Neil Flattery, Weir, freshman Will Teubel, and Prom clocked a time of 3:15.84 to finish 10th.

The Hawkeyes will return to action Feb. 15 hosting the Iowa Invitational.
