SAN FRANCISCO — Junior Jonas Dierckx and sophomore Matt Hagan improved their doubles record to 9-2 and the University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened its spring break trip Sunday at San Francisco. Dierckx and Hagan’s doubles success wouldn’t be enough as the Hawkeyes (6-6 overall) fell to the Dons, 7-0.

The Hawkeyes dropped the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches, but won the final one in dramatic fashion to enter singles play with momentum. Dierckx and Hagan defeated Jonathon Knowlman and Richard Bucalem in extra games, 9-8 (5). The duo has Iowa’s best doubles record this season, and has won three straight matches.

San Francisco went on to sweep singles play and secure the victory despite two tightly contested matches. Senior Garret Dunn and junior Juan Estenssoro each won their second sets, but fell short in the match tie-breaker. San Francisco improves to 7-3 with the win.

Iowa will continue its spring break trip on Wednesday, competing against Pacific (9-4). Start time is set for 4 p.m. (CT).
