STOCKTON, Calif. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team split six singles matches at Pacific, but fell by a 4-3 margin Thursday afternoon at the Hal Nelson Courts. The Hawkeyes (6-7) picked up victories from the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles positions after the Tigers (10-4) won the doubles point.
“I thought we played much better here in our second match outdoors,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “We had a good showing against a really strong opponent. We still need to get over the hump, but I feel like we’re closing in on that.”
Iowa won three tightly contested singles matches to finish strong. Juan Estenssoro defeated Daniel Alameh in No. 4 singles after prevailing in a tie-breaker (6-4, 7-6 (10)). Freshman Dominic Patrick won his No. 5 singles match, rallying after losing the first set. Patrick won the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Andres Estenssoro won the No. 6 singles match in similar fashion, defeating Alex Hamilton in the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Hawkeyes will wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow, meeting Fresno State (4-11) at 1 p.m. (CT) in the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
