FRESNO, Calif. — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team closed its spring break trip on a high note, defeating Fresno State today at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Hawkeyes (7-7) won the first four points of the match and went on to a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
“This is clearly one of our better wins in recent years, beating a Fresno State team that is highly regarded for having a really solid program,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “This is a great way to finish our trip. We got better after every match, and this will give our guys a lot of confidence entering the Big Ten schedule when we get back.”
The Hawkeyes took an early lead, 1-0, after claiming the top two doubles matches. Juniors Michael Swank and Joey White won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-5, while juniors Jonas Dierckx and Juan Estenssoro won the No. 1 doubles match by the same count.
Freshman Dominic Patrick made quick work of his No. 5 singles match to add to Iowa’s advantage. The Gilbert, Ariz., native defeated Sam MacNeil in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Andres Estenssoro enjoyed similar success in the No. 6 singles match, winning each of the first two sets by a 6-3 margin.
Sophomore Matt Hagan clinched the victory for Iowa with the team’s fourth point, winning the No. 3 singles match in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). Junior Jonas Dierckx won his first career match at the No. 1 singles position, beating Reid deLaubenfels in extra games. Dierckx won both sets, 7-5.
The Hawkeyes will return to action with Big Ten competition on Friday, traveling to Penn State (6-9, 0-1). Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Sarni Tennis Center.
