PALO ALTO, Calif. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team sits in 10th place out of 17 teams after the opening round of the U.S. Intercollegiate today at the Stanford Golf Course. Playing their first stroke-play event of the spring season, the Hawkeyes shot a four-over par, 284 – Iowa’s third lowest round of the season.
Sophomore Brian Bullington is tied for 19th place after going under par to lead Iowa. Nine players are tied for the lead at four-under, while ninth-ranked Stanford sits atop the leaderboard at eight-under.
“We were ready to play today, but a few lapses in concentration cost us shots on the back nine,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “If we get all five guys going in the right direction, we can play with anyone in this field.”
An even-keeled Bullington was able to tie his career low round, carding a 69. Bullington had just two bogeys on the round. The Frankfurt, Ill., native made birdie on holes 7, 9 and 16 to head to the clubhouse just three strokes off the lead.
Junior Steven Ihm is tied for 31st place, firing a one-over (71) opening round. The reigning second-team All-Big Ten selection made the turn at two-under par before surrendering three strokes on the backside. Ihm had three birdies on the day.
Sophomore Joseph Winslow is also tied for 31st through round one. Winslow’s round got off to a stellar start after playing the first 10 holes at three-under. Winslow made four bogeys on the back nine to finish at one-over. He had three birdies in his round.
In his first stroke-play event with Iowa’s varsity lineup, freshman Nate Yankovich shot a three-over, 73, to provide Iowa’s fourth counting score. The score puts Yankovich in 61st place. The Blacklick, Ohio, native settled down after a rough start, going two-under on the back nine.
Sophomore Ian Vandersee shot six-over (76) with birdies on holes 1, 15, and 16.
Tomorrow’s round will begin at 10 a.m. (CT) with a double-tee start off holes 1 and 10. Live results can be found at http://www.golfgamebook.com/collegegolf.
