March 29, 2013

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Shooting the third best round of the day, the University of Iowa men’s golf team climbed the leaderboard Friday at the U.S. Intercollegiate. The Hawkeyes are in sole possession of sixth place after carding a two-over, 282, in the second round. Iowa is six-over for the tournament with a 36-hole tally of 566. Competition is being held at the par-70, Stanford Golf Course.

The Hawkeyes jumped four spots on the leaderboard to sit in sixth out of the talented 17-team field. Iowa’s 566 is its second best two-round score of the season. Junior Steven Ihm led the charge for the Hawkeyes, carding the third best individual round of the day to jump from 31st to 7th place.

Tournament host Stanford remains in first place at 17-under (543). TCU (554), St. Mary’s (559), San Francisco (559) and Oregon (565) round out the top-five. Two players are tied for the individual lead at eight-under.

“Steven hung in there today and took advantage of some birdie holes coming in — a 67 is a nice score today,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “Our goal for tomorrow will be to shoot the best team score of the day, take care of our individual goals and continue to remain focused, stay in the present and adapt as we compete.”

Ihm entered hole 7, his third-to-last hole of the day, with a one-under par round. He went on to make eagle on the 539-yard, par-five to shoot a three-under, 67. Ihm is two-under (138) on the tournament, six strokes away from the top of the leaderboard.

Sophomore Brian Bullington is tied for 27th after firing a three-over, 73. Bullington played the first 11 holes at one-under before giving up four strokes to close his round. After a one-under opening round, Bullington sits at two-over on the tournament (142).

Joseph Winslow made a great recovery in his round to card a two-over, 72. The sophomore sat at four-over through his first seven holes before playing the final 11 at two-under. He made birdie on holes 1, 7 and 9. Winslow is currently three-over (143) on the tournament and in a tie for 33rd place.

Sophomore Ian Vandersee shot Iowa’s second lowest round of the day, an even-par, 70. The West Des Moines native had 14 pars and two birdies on his scorecard. Vandersee is six-over (146) through two rounds, sitting in 62nd place.

Freshman Nate Yankovich shot a five-over, 75, and is tied for 71st (148/+8). Yankovich had a streak of seven straight pars to open his round and birdied holes 1, 7 and 9.
