IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team (7-8, 0-3) fell to Penn State (7-10, 1-3) 4-3 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Friday afternoon.

Singles action was highlighted by junior Jonas Dierckx and freshman Dominic Patrick. After falling in his first set, Dierckx battled back to defeat Welnetz 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. The win improves Dierckx’s singles record to 9-6. Playing in the No. 5 singles slot, Patrick took down Young of Penn State in two quick sets, winning 6-1, 6-2.

The Hawkeyes found success in doubles play, winning 2-of-3 matches to win the doubles point. Senior Garret Dunn and sophomore Matt Hagan took down Chen and Young of Penn State, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles slot. Juan Estenssoro and Dierckx picked up the other doubles victory, taking down Trkulja and Welnetz of Penn State, 8-6.

“Just as the final score indicates, it was a tough loss and a missed opportunity,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “I’m disappointed with the loss but still confident in our team as long as we can put together some matches where everyone is playing well on the same play. That is what it takes in Big Ten play this year especially.”

The Hawkeyes return to the courts Sunday hosting Ohio State at 11 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
