IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team fell to No. 7 Ohio State 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Iowa (7-9, 0-4) failed to gain the doubles point against Ohio State (20-2, 5-0) as Ohio State won all three doubles matches. Among the highlights, Michael Swank and Joey White lost a close match to Van Engelen and McCarthy of Ohio State losing the tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-5).
The Hawkeyes had a tough time in singles action as Ohio State won all six matches. Jonas Dierckx, Garret Dunn, Juan Estenssoro, Matt Hagan, and Dominic Patrick all fell to ranked opponents.
“We’re never going to be happy with a loss, especially a 7-0 team score,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “But I will say we played a very competitive match against one of the best teams in the country that’s capable of winning the National Championship. Several of our guys played very competitive matches against highly ranked opponents. We’ve now played three of the four top teams in the Big Ten and I feel like we’re on the verge of putting together a very strong second half of the Big Ten season.”
Iowa will travel to Nebraska next to take on the Cornhuskers on April 3 at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
