IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team clinched the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with a 196.375-194.575 victory over Iowa State on Friday. Iowa performed without senior Kaitlynn Urano, who suffered a leg injury in practice on Thursday. With a season-high attendance mark (2,303), the GymHawks rallied to remain undefeated at home.
The Cy-Hawk showdown, which concluded Iowa’s homestand, was the seniors’ last time competing in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Senior Maya Wickus earned a season-best 9.875 on the vault, tying for second with sophomore teammates Sydney Hoerr and Emma Willis. Senior Emma Stevenson tied for the bar title with Iowa State junior Camille Santerre-Gervais (9.850) and capped off the night anchoring the floor lineup (9.875), tying for second with Hoerr.
“To let seniors go is extremely difficult,” said head coach Larissa Libby. “You’re saying goodbye to kids that have affected your life, your team and your family. We’ve had a very rough 48 hours, losing senior Kaitlynn Urano to injury on her Senior Night. To have the team focus down, flip that scenario, come out with the best score they’ve had all season, win against Iowa State and clinch the Cy-Hawk award speaks volumes of this team. We’ve got more work to do, but tonight they are champions.”
Iowa grabbed the top-three all-around spots. Hoerr won the all-around title, totaling a career-best 39.400. Willis trailed with 39.275, while freshman Alie Glover finished third (38.975). Iowa State senior Elizabeth Stranahan placed fourth with 38.750.
Iowa started the meet on vault, earning a season-high 49.275. Willis won the event, matching her career-best 9.925. Hoerr, Wickus and freshman Kyra Trowbridge followed with a triplet of 9.875s. Freshman Adara Griffin also contributed a career-best 9.825.
On the bars, Iowa totaled 49.000. Stevenson led the Hawkeyes with 9.850, Hoerr posted 9.825, Willis scored 9.800, and Wickus added 9.775. Iowa also counted Glover’s lead-off routine (9.700).
At the halfway mark, the Hawkeyes gained a 98.375-97.500 lead over the Cyclones. Iowa tallied 48.775 on the beam, while Iowa State posted 49.125 on the floor. Hoerr paced the lineup with a career-high 9.825 for second place. Trowbridge earned a career-best 9.800, Willis scored 9.775, sophomore Caitlin Tanzer posted 9.700, and Glover added 9.675.
In the final rotation, Iowa earned 49.225 on the floor, while Iowa State totaled 47.950 on beam. Trowbridge won the floor title, tying her career-high 9.900, while Hoerr and Stevenson earned 9.875 for second. Iowa also counted Glover’s 9.800 and Willis’ 9.775.
The GymHawks will travel to Cedar City, Utah to take on Southern Utah, San Jose State and Ball State on Friday, March 15. Action is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (CT) in Centum Arena.
