WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Iowa men’s golf team has a six stroke lead after two excellent rounds Saturday in the Boilermaker Invitational. The Hawkeyes sit atop the leaderboard in the 18-team field with a 36-hole score of 577 (+1). Iowa leads No. 34 Illinois (583/+7) by six with 18 holes left to play.

Iowa carded an opening round 290 (+2) and sat in second before going under par in the afternoon round. Iowa closed the day with a one-under, 287, to distance itself from the field. Sophomore Joseph Winslow is currently in first out of the 93-man field while junior Steven Ihm is tied for second.

Competition is being held on the 7,465-yard Kampen Course on the Birck Boilermaker Invitational.

“We were ready to play and got contributions from all five guys,” said UI head coach Mark Hankins. “They worked hard to stay in the present all day and fought for every shot. It’s a great start for Joseph and Steven. They were both playing to their strengths and took advantage of the golf course when they had the opportunity.”

Winslow’s opening round four-under, 68, was the best round of the day and tied his career low mark. After making par on the first four holes to start his round, Winslow played the next six holes at five-under par – highlighted by an eagle on the par-five fourth hole. The Overland Park, Kan., native got off to another strong start in his second round after getting to three-under before finishing with an even-par, 72. Winslow has played nine rounds at or below par this season.

Ihm is one stroke back of Winslow with a two-round tally of 141 (-3). Ihm’s first round was steady as she goes with two birdies, 15 pars and just one bogey to card a one-under (71). The Peosta, Iowa, native made five birdies in his second round and shot a two-under par, 70. He has now played seven of his last eight rounds at or below par.

Sophomore Brian Bullington is tied for 21st place with a 36-hole mark of 146 (+2). The Frankfurt, Ill., native shot a 74 (+2) in the morning before closing the day with an even-par round. He had three birdies and 12 pars in his second round.

Sophomore Ian Vandersee tallied a two-round score of 152 (+8) and is tied for 41st place. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native carded a 77 (+5) in the morning before shaving two strokes off in his second round with a 75 (+3). Vandersee made four birdies on the day.

Freshman Nate Yankovich is tied for 46th in the field through two rounds with a 154 (+10) total. The Blacklick, Ohio, native shaved eight strokes in his second round to improve 26 places on the leaderboard. After opening with an 81 (+9), Yankovich responded with a one-over, 73, afternoon round.

“We’re going to trust our preparation and experience tomorrow, continue to be aggressive and play the course that’s in front of us,” said Hankins.

Tomorrow’s final round is slated to begin at 7:45 a.m. (CT) with a shotgun start. Live results are available at www.golfstat.com
