IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Minnesota, 10-2, on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game set.

“We didn’t make plays,” said UI head coach Jack Dahm. “They hit some balls hard, and we just couldn’t get there. They were finding holes and we weren’t able to get back into it.”

Minnesota (25-14, 7-3), who evened the series 1-1, ran out to a 9-0 lead that included seven run in the third inning.

The Golden Gophers plated one run in the top of the first inning, as Ryan Abrahamson hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Minnesota stretched its lead to 8-0 in the third inning, plating seven runs on six hits. Four different Golden Gophers tallied RBIs in the frame. Matt Halloran accounted for three RBIs after hitting a bases-loaded double.

The Golden Gophers tacked on their ninth run in the top of the fourth inning via a Dan Olinger sacrifice fly.

The Hawkeyes (16-21, 4-10) broke into the run column in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on four hits to cut the Minnesota lead to 9-2. All four Hawkeye hits were singles, beginning with freshman Blake Hickman. Classmate Nick Roscetti and sophomores Eric Toole and Kris Goodman all followed with singles of their own. Goodman’s base knock plated both runs in the frame. The RBIs were the 18th and 19th of the year for Goodman, tying him with sophomore Jake Yacinich for the team lead.

Minnesota tacked on a run in the top of the ninth inning, pushing its advantage to 10-2. Halloran delivered his fourth RBI of the contest, hitting a run-scoring double.

Alec Crawford was the winning pitcher for Minnesota. Crawford, a Wilton, Iowa, native, held the Hawkeyes hitless through the first 5 2/3 innings, improving to 2-1 this season. Crawford threw seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

Senior Andrew Hanse suffered the loss after allowing nine runs (three earned) on nine hits in four innings, falling to 3-3 on the year. Sophomore Andrew Hedrick was solid out of the Iowa bullpen, tossing four innings and allowing one run.

Sophomore Anthony Torres, who entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, was the only Hawkeye to record a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 at the plate. It was Torres’ third multi-hit game of the season.

Iowa closes its three-game series with Minnesota tomorrow at Duane Banks Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. (CT).
